Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

Press On, Don’t Give Up, Keep Going

GALATIANS 6:9 – And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

THEME OF THE DAY: PRESS ON, DON’T GIVE UP, KEEP GOING. So, here is what we sign up for when the Lord saves us. Settle in and think through this. First, the “good stuff”. We get the privilege to know God, really know Him, which leads to walking with Him and experiencing His love, joy, peace, and presence. This obviously leads us to proclaiming, “There is nothing better than being a Christian.” Yes, much “good stuff” flows from the loving hand and heart of our now reconciled God. In fact, we might even borrow from the Apostle Paul this definition of the “good stuff” coming from our heavenly Father – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love (Ephesians 1:3,4).

Now, the “not so good stuff” when we become Christians. Actually, it is incorrect to call it “not so good stuff” for God only does and gives good to His children. It is only “not so good stuff” to our sinful flesh, our remaining sin, which only wants easy, comfortable, convenient, and that not only in life, but in serving the Lord. So, here is the “not so good stuff” to our flesh, but additional “good stuff” when it comes to serving the Lord.

In today’s scripture, the Apostle Paul reminds us of what is always true when acceptable service is given to the Lord; we grow weary. When it comes to sacrificial service for the Lord, it will be costly, exhausting, emptying of oneself, met with opposition from the devil and world, even other Christians at times, underappreciated, often not recognized, may not produce visible fruit, leads to the temptation to quit, and frankly, is painfully difficult because of the high demands of death to self it calls for. But I don’t want to paint a gloomy picture. There is no greater privilege and joy in the Christian life than to serve the Lord. So don’t think this is a dull and joyless task leaving one unfulfilled; spiritually and emotionally.

Yet the reality is what the Apostle implies. When he writes, “And let us not grow weary of doing good”, the opposite is real; we do grow weary, and to that end, let me offer one statement of encouragement to press on, don’t give up, and keep on in our service for the Lord. When it gets tough, and it will; when we are tired; and we will, stop and think about the moment when we are face-to-face with Jesus and hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Every ounce of strength, every tear shed, every period of lonely service, and every sleepless night in prayer over our service will be worth it all!

PRAYER: “Father, help me to see beyond the moment of my weariness to the Day I see Your Son.”
QUOTE: “It is the price to pay to serve Jesus; fatigue, discouragement, and weariness and worth it”
