Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

Following Jesus: A False Way and A True Way (Part 1)

6 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.

14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”  15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.  John 6:1-3, 14-15

A. Following Jesus Christ: A False Following

1. False following is sense-based not faith-based (John 6:1-2)

a. Sense-based following lacks a willingness to suffer a loss of comfort (Matthew 4:1-4)

b. Sense-based following lacks a willingness to submit to the providence of God (Matthew 4:5-7)

c. Sense-based following lacks a willingness to die to self (Matthew 4:8-10)

2. False following is self-serving not self-denying (John 6:14-15)

a. Self-serving following seeks to create a Christ who serves not served (Philippians 2:19-21)

b. Self-serving following seeks to submit to Christ selectively (Philippians 2:22)
