Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

The Empowering Presence of the Spirit – Part 5

12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.  Romans 8:12-13

A. Who Indwells the Believer? (The Holy Spirit – Rom. 8:9)

2. Evidenced by individual spiritual growth: 1 John 2:12-17, 2 Peter 3:18, John 17:17-19

3. Evidenced by living with Second Coming thinking: 1 John 3:1-4, Col. 3:1-4, 1 Peter 1:13

4. Evidenced by sacrificial acts of love for God’s people: 1 John 4:7-12, Acts 2:44-45, 2 Cor. 8:1-5

5. Evidenced by a life of obeying God’s commands: 1 John 5:1-3, John 14:15, 21, 23-24

C. Our position in Christ obligates us to a life lived by the Spirit

3. Our life lived in the flesh or Spirit affirms our identity: Rom. 8:13, Rom. 8:9, 1 John 1:6, 1 John 3:4-10

D. Our Position in Christ obligates us to a life of warfare by the Spirit

1. Our primary foe is the flesh: Gal. 5:16-17, Gal. 5:19-21

2. Our primary weaponry comes from the Spirit of God
