Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

Written and Living

MATTHEW 24:35 – Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

THEME OF THE DAY: HIS WORD: WRITTEN AND LIVING.  Ask any true Christian to identify the foundation of our faith and the answer should be quick, with conviction, and boldly stated, “The Bible, God’s Holy Word.” But the answer would expand to “And faith in God’s Written Word takes us to a living relationship to God’s Living Word, the Lord Jesus, our Lord and Savior.”

The Bible claims to be the Word of God – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). The proofs of this claim externally and internally are many and irrefutable.  In addition, the written Word is given to point us to the living Word; the Lord Jesus –You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me (John 5:39). It has been said, “The authority of Scripture is so rooted in and closely linked to the authority of Jesus Christ that the two are indivisible. To attempt to distinguish them is like asking which blade of a pair of scissors is more important, or which leg of a pair of pants is more necessary. We know Christ through the Bible, and we understand the Bible through the knowledge of Christ and the Spirit he sent.”

The joint authority of the Scripture and the Lord Jesus is important in the daily life as a Christian. Here is how.

First, as we read our Bibles, we are to be constantly aware this is Jesus speaking.  Look at today’s scripture.  Jesus is referring to His Word and it is His Word that are the Holy Scriptures.  Every time we open the scripture, let the truths found in the middle of Psalm nineteen guide our thinking about God’s Word – The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward (Psalm 19:7-11).

The other “how” in applying the authority of Scripture and the Lord Jesus in the Christian life is to remember the trustworthiness of the Word and the Lord. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Words will not pass away.”  Here is the power and hope in the Christian life.  God’s Word and God’s Son are true, always true, and will never fail.  He cannot lie. What He says, He does, and this is the anchor for our souls in all of life’s storms!

PRAYER: “Father, I praise You for Your enduring Word that never fails.”

QUOTE: “God has given us His Word.  It is trustworthy. It is true. He cannot lie.”

In the affection of Christ Jesus,
