Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

The Sure Promises of God

JOSHUA 23:14 – And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.”

THEME OF THE DAY: THE SURE PROMISES OF GOD. Today’s scripture contains the last words of Joshua. He ran the race, finished the course, and fought the good fight of faith to the end. He finished well, and the path was hard. Go back and read the first chapter of the book bearing his name. The Lord gave Him promises to help him overcome His fear and anxiety that gripped him when confronted with the task God called him to. So, when we read these words of Joshua, “Not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one them failed”, he is talking from personal experience. God kept His promises, and He will do the same for us. Here are three reasons why we may trust His promises without wavering.

First, God’s promises are trustworthy and will be fulfilled because of His character; He cannot lie – Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior (Titus 1:1-3). Unlike humans who are fallible and don’t always keep their promises, God is infallible and always keeps His promises.

Next, we may trust God’s promises because He is faithful to Himself, even when His children are unfaithful. The example of David’s children serves as a great example of God’s faithfulness to Himself and His Word – If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my rules, if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments, then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes, but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me (Psalm 89:30-36). And there are times in our walks, we are marked by inconsistency, yet, God remains consistent in keeping His promises.

Finally, the promises of God will be kept because His honor and character are at stake. Think about this. If God failed toward His promises, it would slight His character, dishonor His name, and bring discredit to His Word. And He has told us repeatedly, He is committed to exalt His name and His Word for His namesake – I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word (Psalm 138:1-2).

When life is hard and we feel doubt and fear upon us, run and hide in the safety of God’s promises. They are sure and will never fail to come true. Why? The Promiser is trustworthy making His promises sure.

PRAYER: “Father, thank You for giving me Your sure and trustworthy promises.”

QUOTE: “Trust God’s promises without wavering. He has not nor ever will fail to keep them.”
