Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

A Healthy Breakfast

PSALM 90:14 – Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

THEME OF THE DAY. A HEALTHY BREAKFAST. I have been told that nutritionists and medical professionals state breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I don’t know the data on that statement, but the argument is something about fueling oneself for the day after a night of fasting. Whether it is true or not, I do know there is another type of breakfast that is extremely important. I would even say “necessary” as we enter each day of life with all its challenges, trials, tests, and onslaughts from the world, devil, and our flesh. The breakfast I am referring to is spiritual; and particularly, a time meeting God in His Word and prayer to be properly armed for the day before us. As for this early morning time meeting God before meeting people and the world, there is Biblical support for this discipline.

Our Lord Jesus would rise long before dawn to seek His Father’s fellowship – And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed (Mark 1:35). David, also, knew the value of seeking God in the solitude of the early morning. He writes, O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water (Psalm 63:1). The word “earnestly” also translates “in the morning, early.” Other reliable translations read “O God, you are my God; early will I seek you.” Charles Spurgeon commenting on this verse, “Observe the eagerness implied in the time mentioned; he will not wait for noon or the cool eventide; he is up at the rooster crowing to meet his God. Communion with God is so sweet that the chill of the morning is forgotten, and the luxury of the couch is despised. The morning is the time for dew and freshness, and the Psalmist consecrates it to prayer and devout fellowship.” Now I know there are some reading today’s nugget and whispering, or thinking, “Pastor Jim, I am not a morning person. I cannot get up early for time with the Lord. I am best in the evening.” I understand the statement, but I want you to be careful with the statement. The God who created you will also be the God to help you become a “morning person”. It doesn’t mean three hours in the Word and prayer starting at 4:00 a.m. We each have liberty in this area. But too often, if we don’t meet God in the morning, the flurry of life and the exhausting nature of life will cause us to not meet God at all in the day. If we do give Him time as our days wind down, fatigue too often will lead us to mindlessness and unfruitfulness in our seeking God. So, to a certain extent, all of us can become “morning people” and start our day with a healthy spiritual breakfast. And what would that breakfast look like? Today’s scripture is a good “sampling” of a nutritious truth for our souls – meditation on the steadfast love of God. Let me suggest we try it. Get up a little earlier so we won’t be rushed. Search out through a good concordance verses focusing on the love of God. Meditate, pray through them, and bask in His love. In fact, pray like the Psalmist does – “Satisfy me in the morning with your steadfast love.” If we do this consistently, watch how much difference it makes throughout our days. And rightly so . . . the best start to any day is to start it with the Lord who has given us this day.

PRAYER: “Father, help me start my day with You and meditate upon Your incredible love for me.”

QUOTE: “Starting the day with the Lord is the way to keep our hearts on Him throughout the day.”
