Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

The Faithfulness of God

PSALM 26:3  – For your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in your faithfulness.”

THEME OF THE DAY:  THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD.  There is an extremely important truth revealed in today’s scripture.  In fact, its understanding and application are the keys to living the Chrisian life as God intends.  It is about faithfulness, but not ours.  David proclaims his walk with the Lord is not based first on his faithfulness which often wavered as does ours, but on God’s faithfulness which is steady and unchanging.  He will always come through in the toughest of times.  Like in the following story.

It was during the Civil War.  An army storekeeper was in charge of the rations for the soldiers, and one morning, supplies were so low that he was ordered to cut the bread slices thinner. He refused saying, “Oh, no! I cannot; the poor fellows are so hungry!.”  The reply back was, “We are low on supply and will run out soon if we don’t.”  The storekeeper was a Christian and said, “Well, I have faith to believe the Lord will send us more before we are out.” He did not cut the slices but fed the soldiers a full ration of bread.  He came to the last loaf but it was not enough for the hundreds of hungry soldiers remaining. He still had trust in God’s faithfulness.  Suddenly an immense load of provisions arrived at the camp’s headquarters – more than enough to feed the soldiers. It had traveled over 100 miles and got to camp at just the right time.  The storekeeper’s faith was not in and of himself.  He was trusting God’s faithfulness, and that is how the Christian life is lived, by God’s faithfulness to His promises.

The Apostle Peter would open his second letter emphasizing the place of promises in the lives of God’s children – His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire (2 Peter 1:3-4).

And the glorious truths about God’s promises are they are trustworthy and may be relied upon without question; and the One who makes them is faithful and true for He cannot lie –  Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior (Titus 1:1-3).

The Christian life is a walk of faith, yes by us, but first because of the faithfulness of God.  We walk in His faithfulness that enables us to walk in ours.  What a glorious God we have!

PRAYER: “Father, I praise You for Your faithfulness that sustains, encourages, and motivates me to be faithful to You.”

QUOTE: “It is God’s faithfulness to us that keeps us on the narrow path because He never fails and we often do.”
