“The rules of the Lord are true and righteous. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold” (Psalm 19:9b-10a)

1 CORINTHIANS 13:4-8; 13 – Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

THEME OF THE DAY: IT’S ALL THAT REALLY MATTERS. I was a very young Christian. Maybe spiritually two years old. I was quite the spiritual baby both in knowledge and way too much zeal. My parents’ church in the little town in West Virginia where I grew up was holding week-long evangelistic services. I decided to go. The preacher was a simple man and he did something I never saw a preacher do. He not only preached, but sang a solo. My first thought was, “Well, I guess I won’t ever be a preacher because there will be no singing solos from this guy.” I don’t remember what he preached, but I remember what he sang. It was a song titled, “Have I done my best for Jesus?” and here are the lyrics . . .

I wonder have I done my best for Jesus,

Who died upon the cruel tree?

To think of His great sacrifice at Calvary!

I know my Lord expects the best from me.

Refrain:

How many are the lost that I have lifted?

How many are the chained I’ve helped to free?

I wonder, have I done my best for Jesus,

When He has done so much for me?

The hours that I have wasted are so many

The hours I’ve spent for Christ so few;

Because of all my lack of love for Jesus,

I wonder if His heart is breaking too.

I wonder have I cared enough for others,

Or have I let them die alone?

I might have helped a wand’rer to the Saviour,

The seed of precious Life I might have sown.

No longer will I stay within the valley

I’ll climb to mountain heights above;

The world is dying now for want of someone

To tell them of the Saviour’s matchless love.

Think through the lyrics and tie them into today’s scripture. When we look at life, both the scriptures and the song reveal what truly matters in life – doing our best for Jesus with a love for people that is other-worldly. As believers in Jesus Christ, our goal is to manifest and proclaim His love in every setting and to every person we see. May the Lord show us with clarity and power that is really what matters in life as His people.

Because of Him,

Pastor Jim
