Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

The Power In God’s Word

HEBREWS 1:1-4 – Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

THEME OF THE DAY. THE POWER IN GOD’S WORD. Ask any Christian, “Do you believe God’s Word is powerful?” and the answer will be an obvious, “Absolutely.” Continue to ask any Christian, “Do you believe God’s Word is powerful enough to overcome all things in this sin-cursed world?” and again, there will be the loud confident response of “No doubt.” Here is another question, ask any Christian, “Do you believe God’s Word is sufficient to meet all the needs a human being may have in this life and the life to come?” and the answer will be a bold, “Yes, I do with all my heart.” Okay, now, let’s ask one more question that is not as “safe” as the first three. And what I mean about “not being safe” is that all the questions I previously asked escape personal application in our daily lives. We have no problem proclaiming the power and sufficiency of scripture to create the world, control the affairs in the world, and provide for all the needs a human being will ever have now and for eternity. But what about in our personal lives daily?

When we are facing anxiety over an uncertain outcome in a tough situation is God’s Word powerful enough to replace our anxious thoughts with His sustaining peace? Jesus said, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). If our God spoke all of creation into being by His Word, and He did; if our God sustains all things by His Word, and He does; then He can speak peace to our anxiety-filled hearts by His Word, and He will . . . if we rest upon His Word by faith.

And what about confronting fears in our lives? The world is full of fear. We each may make a long list of fears seeking to sink our faith and lead us into despairing stress in our lives. Here is something to do. Sit down with a pen and sheet of paper (make it an 8 ½ by 11 because we may need it) and list all the fears that keep us awake at night and want to paralyze our faith in God. After the list is done, take another sheet of paper and write down in very large print (use another 8 ½ by 11 size) these two verses – For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you” (Isaiah 41:13) and Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6). Then, take the Word of God and put it on top of the list of fears. Basically, cover up, block out, make invisible the fears on the other sheet of paper. Let the power of the Word of God remove all of life’s fears that keep us from knowing and relying on the power of the Word of God.

So, as we affirm our unwavering faith in the power of God’s Word, let’s affirm it personally by applying it to conquer all of life’s troubles and tribulations that come our ways. That is what faith does and God always rewards faith in His Person and Word.

PRAYER: “Father, forgive me for the times I allow worry and anxiety to quiet the power of Your Word to quiet both.”

QUOTE: “If God can speak all of creation into being with His Word, He can quiet your hearts by it too.”
