Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

The All-Sufficiency Of Jesus Christ

COLOSSIANS 2:9-10 – For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.

THEME OF THE DAY. THE ALL-SUFFICIENCY OF JESUS CHRIST. We are needy people. By design. By creation. God made us not only for His good pleasure but for us to be totally dependent on Him. When our first parents, Adam and Eve, listened to the lies of the devil and disobeyed God, welcome sinful independence into the human experience. And misery has existed ever since. To boast of independence, to seek independence, and to live independently is to go contrary to Divine Design. Should we insist on living in such a manner, the road will be difficult, unfulfilling, lead to futility and unless turned from will result in eternal separation from God. Yet, we hope. God has provided the means to regain our created order; glorious dependence on Him. And He has done so in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Today’s scripture reveals to us the all-sufficiency of the Lord Jesus to those who will believe and trust Him. His sufficiency is for this life and all eternity.

First, the Lord Jesus is enough for our salvation – He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed (1 Peter 2:24). Friends, Jesus bore not some of our sins, but all our sins. They are remembered no more by the God who justifies the believing sinner (Hebrews 10:17). We never fear they will come back to harm or punish us. When God the Father punished God the Son for our sins, opening the door to a free and sufficient salvation, the work was finished once and for all (John 19:30). Christ is enough for our greatest need in life; salvation.

Next, the Lord Jesus is enough for our sanctification. I know “sanctification” is a big word, but it may be understood as the work in this life of God the Holy Spirit making us like God the Son. It is the slow, but sure process of becoming more and more like the Lord Jesus. And unlike the many unfinished projects we may start around home, what God starts, God finishes – And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6). Yes, the work of salvation by Christ leads to the work of sanctification in Christ. And as His work of salvation is enough so is the work of sanctification. Though at times we may see little progress, the work goes on. Christ ensures it will from start to finish.

A third truth of the all-sufficiency of the Lord Jesus for the believer is that He is enough to meet all our inward needs as human beings. Do we crave for companionship in life? Jesus says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Do we feel weak and without strength as we face the many challenges of living in a fallen world? Jesus says, “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Do we long for contentment, purpose, and satisfaction in our hearts and lives? Jesus says, “I come that they might have life and that abundantly” (John 10:10). Fellow believer, there is nothing we need or any heart longing in this life that Jesus cannot fulfill. He is all-sufficient. Trust Him. He will prove Himself over and over to be enough in this life and for all eternity.

PRAYER: “Father, I praise You for giving me all I need for this life and the next in Your Son.”
