PSALM 103:1-5 – “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
THEME OF THE DAY: SHOWERS OF BLESSINGS. The early morning greeted me with the sound of rain. I opened the windows in my home office just to listen. There is something about a falling rain when it is the only sound outside. The homes in my neighborhood sat dark and quiet. Their occupants sound asleep. No traffic on the streets. No dogs being walked. No kids on bikes. All quiet except for the music-like sound of morning showers. And I listened; even mesmerized. Then the thought of a hymn came to my mind. It was penned in 1883 by D. W. Whittle. The title is There Shall Be Showers of Blessing. Here is the hymn in its entirety:
There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.
Refrain:
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.
There shall be showers of blessing,
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain. [Refrain]
There shall be showers of blessing:
Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing,
Come and now honor Thy Word. [Refrain]
There shall be showers of blessing:
Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call! [Refrain]
As I hummed through the hymn with the backdrop of literal showers outside my window, I thought about the showers of blessing God gives to me daily. Do that yourself. I had to admit; I often count my problems and trials more than His blessings. Maybe you can relate to me? Maybe that is why we are not walking in the fullness of joy that Lord would have us? Yes, showers of blessings. We get them daily, and they are far more numerous than our problems. Think about that, the next time it starts to rain!
PRAYER: Father, I praise You for the many “showers of blessings” You give to me daily.
REFLECTION: Count your many blessings. They are more numerous than our problems and difficulties.
