Pleasing God, Making Disciples of Jesus Christ

Jesus: Enough for All Things In Life

PSALM 107:1-9 – Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.”

Christian, is Jesus enough for us in this life? The obvious answer from our heads is, “Of course He is. Jesus is enough for everything I need in life.” No true Christian would deny this Biblical truth. But let’s go a little deeper, “Do we live this truth that Jesus is enough in this life?” We cannot answer this question with words. Lifestyles and choices answer it. Well, let’s break this down and see if our lives answer the question correctly.

First, is Jesus enough to bring contentment to our hearts and minds in all circumstances, relationships, and situations? The Apostle Paul would say “Amen. Yes, He is” and so must we be learning this same experience of contentment in Christ alone–“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me (Philippians 4:11-13).

Next, is Jesus enough to bring satisfaction to our souls, preventing us from seeking something new, something different, or some other experience in this world to fulfill our deepest yearnings and longings? Remember these words of satisfaction from the Lord Jesus, “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35);Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’”(John7:38). Spiritual bread and water from the Lord Jesus will always be enough for His people to bring satisfaction to the soul, fulfillment in life, and rest for the heart. If this isn’t our experience of finding Jesus enough through His Word and prayer, we are attempting to find the impossible.

Finally, is Jesus enough to be the healer of our hurting and broken hearts when life’s disappointments and failed expectations come upon us? This is the promise of the Lord to such people – He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds(Psalm 147:3). The question for us becomes . . . “Where do we go when our life crashes and we hurt?” We have two places for comfort–the world which never delivers and the Word–written in the Scripture and Living in Christ. What we choose tells us if Jesus is enough.

God has given us all we need in His Son, the Lord Jesus. It is our responsibility to not only acknowledge this truth in our heads and hearts, but to live it in our lives. In doing so we will tell the world “Jesus is enough now and forever.”

PRAYER: “Father, thank You for Your Son and in Him all I need for contentment and rest of soul.”
QUOTE: “Christian, Jesus is enough to satisfy every longing of your heart and desire in life.”
