PSALM 69:5 – “O God, it is You who knows my folly, And my wrongs are not hidden from You.”
THEME OF THE DAY: HE LOVES US STILL. The truth of today’s scripture we know, believe, and readily acknowledge as truth. Yes, God’s aware of our folly. Yes, God’s aware of our wrongs. David would go into more depth of this truth in the one hundred and thirty-ninth Psalm – “O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether” (Psalm 139:1-4).
We don’t struggle with the omniscience of God. The theological truth that He knows everything about us is a biblical fact we don’t question. Granted we don’t understand it fully, but we believe it sincerely. Now get ready for an amazing truth tied to the omniscience of God but first, think about this.
What if we showed up at church next Sunday morning, and everyone had received a “special ability” Saturday night to know everything about us. They knew our lives inside and out; where we had gone, what we had done, the conversations we held, the activities we participated in, the thoughts we entertained, the attitudes we had toward people, the websites we visited, the relationship struggles we had, and everything else about us – everything. That would humble anyone, and if we knew in advance we were going to be with such people, we might suddenly be sick and absent. We care what people think of us. A lot. The morning of this occurring would be very uncomfortable. Now back to God’s omniscience.
Charles Spurgeon once said, “God has restricted the knowledge of the human heart to Himself.” Good thing! People cannot know us as we really are, but God does, and here is the amazing truth that thrills the soul and causes our hearts to soar – He loves us anyway. Really. He does. The prophet Jeremiah proclaims of the Lord, “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3). It is a staggering truth that God set His love on us not because we earned it but despite us. He loves us because He loves us and does so as He knows everything about us.
It overwhelms the soul to ponder such love. The response? Worship, submission, humility, awe, obedience, and a desire to pursue Him to be like Him and with Him in the splendor of holiness.
Oh, our many failings and such folly we find within ourselves living life in this world! Yet we also find our God who knows all things, and us, inside and out, loving us with a steadfast, eternal, and unchanging love that will never be taken from us. Rest and rejoice in this liberating truth!
PRAYER: Father, I am overwhelmed that You know everything about me and love me still.
REFLECTION: The truth that God knows everything about us and still loves us should motivate our love for Him.
